How pigmentation occurs and what you can do about it

The substance that colors our skin is called pigment. Accumulations of this substance pigment are called pigment spots. When a concentrated presence of pigment occurs in a particular place, a dark spot is formed. Do you suffer a lot from pigmentation spots and therefore want to have them treated? Pigmentation spots can be removed in various cosmetic clinics. Want to remove your pigmentation spots in The Hague? This is possible at Van Lennep Kliniek, a cosmetic clinic with highly skilled doctors and skin therapists on staff and lots of experience.

Different types of pigmentation spots

There are different types of pigmentation. Each with a different cause. At Van Lennep Kliniek all these pigmentation spots can be treated.

  • The birthmark. The birthmark is, as the name implies, a congenital pigmentation spot. They come in different shapes and sizes. Birthmarks are also called “beauty spots. It is important to check birthmarks annually for growth, discoloration, change in edges and change overall.
  • Freckles. Freckles are pigmentation spots that occur in certain skin types. The lighter the skin and hair, the more freckles. People with red and light blond hair tend to have (many) freckles. Freckles are therefore hereditary. During the summer months, more freckles always appear. This can be prevented by staying out of the sun and using a good protective sunscreen.
  • Pregnancy mask. These pigmentation spots, also called Melasma, are caused by strong hormonal changes due to pregnancy. The hormones can cause a disruption in the production of skin pigment. Usually we see the pigmentation spots on the cheeks, forehead and around the mouth. Protect the skin well with a Uv-filter with high protection factor.
  • Age spots. Age spots are pigmentation spots caused by the sun’s influence on our skin. Whereas freckles diminish or disappear during the winter months, age spots simply remain visible throughout the year. The spots are most common on the face, décolleté, hands and arms. Precisely those places that are frequently exposed to the sun.
